About this rule

How to tell

Find the verb (the action word) and put na (not) right after it. English puts "not" before the verb; Bangla puts it after:

Ami jani na.I don't know.

Why it works

Bangla sentences end with the verb, so na (not) usually ends the sentence too. That makes a no easy to hear: wait for the last word.

Good to know

For "there isn't" or "don't have", use nei (there isn't):

Amar shomoy nei.I don't have time.

Good to know

For the past, use -ni:

Ami khaini.I didn't eat.
