About this rule

How to tell

Take the present form for that person:

ami koriI do
tumi koroyou do
o korehe or she does
apni korenyou do (respectful)

Then add -ni:

koriniI didn't do
koroniyou didn't do
korenihe or she didn't do
korenniyou didn't do (respectful)

The verb itself shows no past; ni carries it.

Why it works

Bangla does not add na (not) to korechhi (I've done). It says korini (I didn't do), the present form plus ni. It answers both I didn't and I haven't.

Korlam na (I didn't do it) exists, but usually means I chose not to.

Good to know

Was and had take na (not), not ni:

Ami chhilam na.I wasn't there.
Amar taka chhilo na.I had no money.

Good to know

Ekhono (yet) often comes with it:

Ekhono shesh hoyni. It isn't finished yet.
