In, at, on

Word endings

In, at, on

Bangla puts an ending on the place word instead of putting "in" before it: gari-te (in the car).

Which ending

After a consonant

-e

For example

bathroom-e

in the bathroom

After a vowel

-te

For example

gari-te

in the car

About this rule

How to tell

Listen to the last sound of the place word.

-e it ends in a consonant.

bathroom-ein the bathroom
ghor-ein the room
school-eat school

-te it ends in a vowel.

gari-tein the car
bari-teat home
nodi-tein the river

Why it works

Where English puts a small word in front (in the car, at home), Bangla puts an ending on the back of the place. The same ending covers in, on and at, and "to" with going verbs:

table-eon the table
school-e jaiI go to school

For on top of something, use upore (on top of):

gari-r uporeon top of the car

Good to know

Words ending in -a often take -y instead. You will hear Dhaka-te (in Dhaka) too.

Dhaka-yin Dhaka
jayga-yin the place
panchta-yat five o'clock

Good to know

With going and coming, the place can take -e or no ending at all. Bari (home) usually takes none.

school-e jaiI go to school
bazar-e gelamI went to the market
Dhaka jaboI'll go to Dhaka
bari jaogo home
